The fight to protect the duly recorded Open Space of Tatum Ridge will be a feature topic on tomorrow's Talk of the Town. Commissioner Tom Knight will be joined by Suncoast Searchlight journalist Derek Gillam and, yours truly, Matt Procaccini. Come join us!
Tomorrow's subject is Florida's Live Local Act. When the LLA was passed in 2023, Senate President Kathleen Passidomo, said the clear purpose was to convert under-utilized commercial and industrial land in urban areas into affordable workforce housing "close to workplaces, shopping centers and schools." But the Act's vague language has created potential loopholes encouraging developers to apply for LLA approval on residential land far from urban areas - including the massive 2,250 apartment proposal for the Tatum Ridge Golf Links land.
Led by Commissioner Knight, Sarasota has made a Bold Move by denying all Live Local proposals targeted at residential land. In Sarasota, most Live Local applications have not been in urban areas. This Move is a line in the sand intended to bring about a reconciliation of the Act's intent with its implementation. Sarasota is at the forefront of this huge land rights, land use, and Home Rule debate rippling all across Florida.
